Maintenence
Hey, y’’all.
I haven’t checked in here since April. Figured I should say hello.
So what’s going on?
I’ve been writing raps for a project. It’s not a Buck 65 album, per se. But it is a full-length project. Not sure when it will see the light of day. Maybe next year sometime? I went into this one with a particular mindset and then quickly shifted gears. It took on a life of its own. At this point I should know better than to think I can control where the creative impulse take me.
After I wrap up this current project, there are a few others lined up. Although I have been logging ideas, none of the projects in the cue are ‘proper’ Buck 65 albums. What do I mean by that? I guess a ‘proper’ Buck 65 album is one where I work alone.
That said! In a week or two, I will begin assembling the next Drum Study mix-thing. I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s work I’m very proud of. When #4 is ready, I’ll fire a signal flare and will post it to Bandcamp.
I’m also about to tackle a thing that isn’t an album (not a book or a movie or anything like that either).
On the topic of my output, I decided to conduct a little experiment recently. For purposes of research, experimentation and indulgence, I made a playlist of my favorite Buck 65 songs. Over the last few months, I have listened to it a lot. I wanted to see how my listening would evolve over time. Which songs would I start skipping? Which songs would keep me excited over the long term? This may only be interesting to me (so forgive me) but the songs that I still get excited about hearing after many-many listens are… “Part O” from King Of Drums (“…they idolize my poetry because it’s psychedelic…”), “Restored Ford” from The Last Dig (Double Nice) and (you’re going to hate this) the remake I made of “Untitled” from Man Overboard (“I wander the fields and listen for the sound of drums…”). I think that one’s on the No Children comp.
I still haven’t fully processed what this information means. I think maybe those songs have a bit of magic in them that mystifies me or something. It’s like I can’t fully understand them myself. Maybe when I made them I left the Earth for a little while. “Part O”, in particular. What the hell is going on there? That song is some whole other shit.
I’ve also been trying to determine which of my own albums is my favorite. Obviously, that’s a very difficult decision for me to make. It may be most fair to say ‘my favorite since 2022’. You know about my feelings about most of my older stuff. Anyway. This may change tomorrow but if I had to make a call on it today, I think it would be Super Dope.
What else? The digging has been quite good lately. My luck was so good last week in particular, that it was almost weird. I think I must have done something to awaken the gods.
Otherwise, my main obsession lately has been my yard. I’ve been trying to make my little patch of land look nice. It’s a bit of a war with squirrels that I’m losing. I don’t know how to fight a squirrel. I try to make something grow and they dig it up.
I’ve had a few other things on my mind lately but I’ve been struggling with how to put them into words. I’ll keep thinking on it. And I’m due to pick up where I left off with the “Let’s Get Granular” posts. There are some songs I’ve been meaning to dive into. “No Idea How”. “Indestructible Sam”. “Bandits”. “Exes”. A few others. I’ve also been meaning to write about my memories of playing a particularly great festival in Scotland twenty-some-odd years ago.
That’s all for now.
Hope all is good.
Until the next.
