A Motivating Plan Named "Saturdays"
Hey, y’all.
Can I tell you about the day I had this past Saturday, real quick?
I woke up feeling energized because I found out the day before that a little health scare I had was a false alarm. I kinda want to share some thoughts about that experience with you because it gave me the chance to do some pretty deep thinking but I haven’t processed it all yet. Maybe later.
Anyway. My sister sent me a link that allowed me to watch my niece’s hockey game online. Ella is amazing. She plays on an elite team in Nova Scotia. She’s a rookie and an ‘underager’. She’s 14. Most of the other players in the league are 16 and 17, maybe 18. The game on Saturday was wild. Ella’s team was playing their rival team. The action was intense from the first face-off and tempers were running hot. The other team jumped out to an early lead and then Ella basically took over. The game ended in a 3-3 tie. Ella scored two of her team’s three goals and got the assist on the third. She was later named ‘player of the game’.
The broadcast of the game had a play-by-play announcer who was singing Ella’s praises all game long. Before the game, he interviewed her. The interview ran during the intermission between the second and third periods. She’s a pretty shy kid but she handled herself really well in the interview. She gave me a shout out and said she has always looked up to me. I was bursting with pride. After the game, I texted her to congratulate her on an incredible game. She texted back saying “I miss you”. Tears. I love that kid. She’ll go as far in hockey as she chooses to. You might watch her games on TV one day too. She’s a star!
By the way, Ella’s big sister is Gracie. Back in ’06 (I think), I sold a mixtape-album-thing on tour called Strong Arm. There’s a song on there called “What Grace Means” that I wrote right after Grace was born and I became an uncle for the first time. Grace is super-awesome too. She’s a way cooler person than I could ever hope to be. I love my nieces to death. And don’t get me started on my nephews, both of whom look like younger versions of me.
Saturday was a good day. After the hockey game, I cleaned and organized the basement. I found some treasures down there. I’ll tell you more about that another time but I’ll share a few things with you now.
First of all, I found a bunch of packs of Yo! MTV Raps trading cards from 1991. Dopeness.
Second, I found these promo baseball cards I had made back in 2001. Kinda cool.
Third, I dug out the rarest and most valuable baseball card in my collection: Hall Of Famer Rube Waddell, 1909.
For my next post, I’m planning to put together a little gallery of some of the other stuff I found.
After cleaning the basement on Saturday, an Amazon package was delivered to my door. Inside the envelope was the latest edition of The Underground Vault. Reading through, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Super Dope was picked as the #3 album of 2023. Nice!
By the way, word is CDs and cassettes for Punk Rock B-Boy are just about ready to go so be on the lookout. If you pre-ordered a copy, you should be getting it soon. And if you haven’t ordered yet, you can do that now, right here (scroll down a bit).
Finally, I’m thinking about setting up a Vertices Instagram account. As I may have mentioned before, I’m locked out of the Buck 65 IG account. Last time I posted anything there was probably close to ten years ago. I’ve tried to regain access to it but haven’t had any luck. I’m beginning to accept that I may have to let it go. So in its place, I may start up a Vertices account where I’ll share smaller bites quickly and more easily. Would you be into that? I’ll probably get to it soon. I’ll let you know when it’s up and running.
Alright, y’all. Until the next.
